Sensational Prison Break Attempt at old Sugarhouse Prison in 1931

Giles, who was lured into the cellhouse and overpowered, is shown with the rope one of the knives and an exploded bomb used by the rioters. Top, right, is a birdís-eye view of the prison yard. Below is the corner of cellhouse No. 1 and the section of the wall where the convicts attempted to go over. At the bottom, Warden R. E. Davis is congratulating L. W. McTavish, a guard, who quickly quelled the disturbance by killing one convict and wounding two others. Inset is Balvin L. Christensen, another guard, who was knocked out and held hostage.
