We are offering the 40-hour Basic Reno Model PTO Course.  The cost includes tuition, handouts, and the PTO manual.  The instructors are the only PTO trainers who have both been involved in the design of the program and have managed a PTO program as practitioners.

The Reno Model is founded on the fact that basic police work falls into four areas that can be trained and evaluated, Non-emergency Response, Emergency Response, Patrol, and Investigations.  Our idea was not to train people for specific incidents, but rather to give them the skills they can use in any incident.  Policing is a multi-task environment, so we train that way in the Reno Model.  The problem with standard evaluation guidelines in other training programs is that they are designed for behavior modification techniques.  The FTO has a description of what an officer does and evaluates the traineešs ability to match that description.  While that worked well for many years, we felt that the training program should focus on adult learning techniques including problem-solving, ethics, and leadership It is based on four substantive topic areas, each area consisting of 15 core competencies.  Each core competency has three training outcomes that meet various levels of Bloomšs Taxonomy of Learning.  This is far more exact than other training models, yet still allows training to occur at more than one level.

The Hoover group is currently writing a similar matrix for California P.O.S.T. to use in all 39 of their police academies.  They liked what they saw in the Reno Model.
