Jill Sheffer
69th Auxiliary President 2001 / 2002
80th UPOA Convention held in Sherwood Hills, Utah
Winter 2001/2002
Recently, I purchased crocus and tulip bulbs at a clearance sale.  I love watching these harbingers of spring push through the snow, banishing the dreariness that winter can become after cold, short, sunless days.  I knew I shouldn't buy them but the price was tempting.  My long, neglected flowerbed overflows with weeds and needs hours of work to prepare the ground for planting; hours that other projects and tasks vie for.  But I buy them anyway.

Now afternoons find me out in the garden digging away at the grass that has become entrenched in the daisies and rescuing old, tired daffodil bulbs too crowded by invading weeds to bloom last spring.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the snow will hold off until I can finish this burgeoning task.  Giving a nod, of course, to the rain that while much needed delays my progress until the ground dries enough to work again.  The hope of bright, cheerful flowers keeps me plodding along.
The world seems to have many hopes right now. We hope that President Bush leads us well, that New York, the Pentagon, and the airlines will recover, that the war ends soon, that our military people come home safely, that the economy settles down and that stocks will climb again.  This time of year my husband, Robert, always hopes it doesn't snow, that people will slow down and drive safely on icy roads, that he doesn't get call out in the middle of a blizzard.
The Christmas season brings another set of hopes. We hope for peace, joy, love, happiness and family.  We hope to find the perfect gift for everyone on the list and we hope to stay within the budget.  We hope the Christmas lights still work; that the gingerbread house will hold together, that Santa will find our house; and we hope for a white Christmas.  (Sorry Robert.)
The UPOA board is busy finalizing arrangements for winter convention, hoping that everything goes as planned, hoping that people can arrange their schedules around Olympic activities. B.L. is hoping to have some explosive training that will make the extra effort worth it and memorial service should be especially poignant as we remember those officers who have died.
Please let us know in advance if you will need baby-sitting services so we can make arrangements ahead of time.  Just a reminder to all the auxiliary board members that our theme for the table decorations is snow.  (Sorry again, Robert.)   If you can, please bring a little gift for our door prizes.

Hope to see you all Winter Convention in St. George!

As I write summer is in full swing, the girls are packing for camp, my son left this morning with the scouts bound for Idaho and family reunions all seem to be scheduled for the same day.  Thank you, Teri Bailey and your board for all the planning and effort you put into Summer Convention.  There was something for everyone: Fun shoots, training, swimming and good food thanks to Maddox Restaurant and the Box Elder Search and Rescue.  The kids even had a fun water fight at the barbecue thanks to their water gun-trophies won during the Kid Shoot.
Summer Convention wasn't at all like I had planned and as I think back on it I must have been in a daze most of the time.  It is a most humbling and challenging experience but I know that I am not alone.  I have some very wonderful ladies who have consented to be part of the board this year and I am looking forward to working with them.  I also have Veronica, who I know will keep me headed in the right direction as I begin my on-the-job training.
We are still in need of a few area representatives from the following regions:
Region B (Weber, Davis, Morgan)
Region F (Emery, Carbon)
Region H (Sanpete, Sevier, Piute, Wayne)
Region I (Grand, San Juan)
Region J (Garfield, Kane).
We really need these areas to be represented. If any of you are interested or you can suggest someone who would like to be an area representative we would be glad to have you.
In view of our difficulty communicating with one another since we are spread out all over the state, I would like to explore the possibility of setting up an Auxiliary Web site that would allow us to keep in touch better. The site would be password protected and only members could get in. It would be a place where we could leave messages and even hold board meetings online. It would also allow members to keep track of Auxiliary activities.  If all the board members have access to the Internet, this could be a useful tool.  Please let me know how you feel about this idea.
I know the weather is hot outside but for a moment I'd like you to think "snow", snowflakes, snowmen, snowballs, etc.  "Snow" will be our decoration theme for the Winter Convention.  With the Olympics in town it should be easy to put together a snow centerpiece.
If any of you know of places in your area where the Auxiliary can be of service, please let me know.  After all, this is what our Auxiliary is really about.
We were saddened at the loss of Sandy Police Chief Sam Dawson and Roosevelt Police Chief Cecil Gurr (and also Farmington Police Chief Jeff Jacobson and Lehi Officer Joe Adams  within a few days of each other.  We witnessed the awesome tribute of hundreds of police officers from near and far as they said farewell to these four great men.
