Provo Police Officer killed in 3-car crash

Kim Nisson, a Provo police officer was killed in a three-car accident in American Fork on January 11, 1995, after his private car was hit from the rear and propelled into oncoming traffic.

Officer Nisson was headed north: slowing to turn left from 500 East onto 620 South at approximately 4 p.m. when his vehicle was struck from the rear by a car and pushed into the patch of an oncoming vehicle traveling south at approximately 50 mph. Nisson was hit head-on by hat car driven.,

Officer Nisson started as a police cadet with Provo in 1978 and became a patrol officer for the next eight years, promoted to corporate in 1987 and named warrants officer in June 1990. He became a sergeant in January 1991 after serving on the hostage negotiations team as team leader for five years.

"He was in incredible hostage negotiator," said Karen Morales, police spokeswoman. "He had a real calm manner and could calm down a situation."

He was currently assigned to the detective division.
