Officer Gus J. Lund, age 56, of 1190 Princeton Avenue, was
a 12 year veteran of the Police Department, having been appointed on February
17, 1912, at the age of 44. Officer Lund's assignment routinely took him
to the intersection of 2100 South and 1100 East in Sugarhouse where he
would direct the noonday traffic. A truck approaching the intersection,
where the officer stook, was pulling a trailer laden with bricks from a
nearby manufacturing concern. Officer Lund, according to witnesses, nodded
his head in acknowledgement to the driver of the truck as he made his turn
at the intersection. As the truck passed, Lund, apparently unaware of the
heavy trailer being pulled, stepped off the curb between the truck and
trailer and was fatally injured.
Officer Lund left a wife, three daughters and six sons.
Officer Lund was the third Salt Lake City Police Officer to die in the
line of duty in 1924.
