Harold A. Peterson, Sr., died of injuries suffered in a traffic accident while operating his 3-wheel motorcycle at 1300 East and 1300 South. Officer Peterson was northbound and struck a left-turning vehicle operated by an elderly man.

Officer Peterson had served his country during World War I and was appointed to the Police Department in 1931. Peterson had served in Patrol, Traffic and Detective Divisions. During his service as a detective, Peterson survived a gunshot wound to the chest while effecting an arrest of armed holdup men. Peterson's life was spared on that occasion, when the bullet fired at him struck a mechanical pencil he was carrying in his pocket.

Officer Peterson resided with his family at 1820 Redondo Avenue. His son, H.A. Peterson, Jr., was also serving as a Police Officer.
