On February 24, 1994, Deputy Michael Scott Welcker was shot and killed while attempting to arrest an armed and dangerous aggravated assault suspect. Deputy Welcker had been with the Sheriff?s Office four years at the time of his death. More than 2,000 police officers came from around the country to Deputy Welcker?s funeral.
